The grey card fulfils various purposes: it helps to measure the correct exposure in difficult light situations during manual white balance. It also serves as a reference card for colour balance when digital post-processing of photos. The black card is photographed together with the white card to determine the contrast circumference of a motif.
The automatic white balance of digital cameras does not provide optimal results in any light situation. In addition, the default settings for daylight or artificial light are set to specific colour temperatures that often do not correspond to the actual prevailing conditions. In both cases, you get pictures with an unsightly colour cast.
For this reason, you should always carry out a manual white balance, where you adjust the white balance of your camera exactly to the colour temperature of the ambient light.
